Hermosa Beach is two blocks from the ocean in most places. The air carries salt, moisture, and sand. If your gate’s electrical components aren’t properly sealed, that environment gets inside the control box, into the conduit, and across the terminal strips. What follows is corrosion, short circuits, and intermittent failures that drive homeowners crazy because the gate works one day and doesn’t the next.
We repair and weatherproof gate electrical systems across Hermosa Beach and the South Bay. This page covers the specific steps that protect gate electronics from coastal conditions: conduit routing, junction box sealing, drip loops, and what to do when water has already gotten inside.

A gate system in Hermosa Beach faces completely different threats than one in Pasadena or the Valley. Understanding the difference matters because the protection strategies are different too.
Coastal (Hermosa, Manhattan Beach, Redondo): Salt-laden moisture is the primary enemy. Marine air carries microscopic salt particles that settle on every surface. When those particles land on exposed copper terminals, they attract moisture from the air and form a corrosive film. This film eats through copper, brass, and steel connections over months. You’ll see green oxidation on copper, white powder on aluminum, and rust on steel hardware.
Inland (Pasadena, Valley, foothills): Dust and heat are the main threats. Fine particulate gets inside control boxes through ventilation gaps and coats circuit boards. Combined with heat, dust creates insulating layers on components that cause them to run hotter. Inland systems rarely corrode, but they overheat.
In Hermosa, we build systems to keep moisture out. Inland, we build to let heat escape. These goals are sometimes at odds: sealing a box tight keeps moisture out but traps heat. Getting the balance right takes experience with both environments.
Every wire running to or from a gate operator should be inside conduit. Period. Exposed wiring in a coastal environment is a ticking clock. Here’s what proper conduit installation looks like:
Material matters. PVC conduit handles salt air without corroding. Metal conduit (EMT) rusts at the coast unless it’s stainless or coated. We use schedule 40 PVC for underground runs and UV-rated PVC for above-ground exposed sections. Metal conduit works indoors or in protected locations, but anywhere that sees direct weather should be PVC.
Fittings sealed, not just assembled. Every conduit fitting, coupling, and box connector is a potential entry point for water. We seal each fitting with PVC cement on glued joints and weatherproof tape on threaded connections. A conduit run with loose fittings is just a pipe that channels rainwater directly to your gate electronics.
Conduit routing avoids water pooling. Conduit runs should slope away from the operator housing and any junction boxes. Water follows gravity. If a horizontal run has a low spot, water collects there. If that low spot happens to be where a junction box sits, the box fills with water over time. Proper routing means every section drains toward the ground, not toward the electronics.
A drip loop is a small downward loop in the wire right before it enters a junction box or operator housing. It sounds like a minor detail. It’s not. Water runs along the outside of wire insulation by surface tension. Without a drip loop, water follows the wire straight into the box. With a drip loop, water runs down to the bottom of the loop and drips off before it reaches the entry point.
Every wire entering a gate control box in Hermosa should have a drip loop. The loop only needs to extend 3 to 4 inches below the entry point. It takes 10 seconds to form during installation and prevents water intrusion for the life of the system.
We also apply non-hardening duct seal (a putty-like compound) around wire entry points. Combined with a drip loop, this two-layer approach keeps water and salt air from wicking into the housing through the wire entry gaps.
Junction boxes are where wires connect. They’re also where most water intrusion happens because they have knockouts, covers, and entry points that aren’t naturally watertight.
For coastal installations, we use NEMA 4X rated enclosures. The “4X” rating means the box is designed to resist corrosion and prevent water entry from rain, splashing, and hose-directed water. Standard NEMA 1 boxes (the gray metal boxes from the hardware store) aren’t rated for outdoor use at the coast. They rust within a year and their gaskets degrade.
Sealing a junction box properly:
If moisture has already entered your gate’s control box, here’s what we check and how we dry things out:
Immediate power off. Kill the breaker. Don’t let a wet board run. Water on an energized circuit board causes electrolysis, where electrical current accelerates corrosion at the component leads. Seconds matter.
Dry everything. We remove the board and dry it thoroughly. Compressed air blows moisture out of component sockets and from under chips. If the corrosion is surface-level (green film on terminals but no pitting), we clean it with contact cleaner and a stiff brush.
Inspect for damage. Corrosion on terminal strips is usually cleanable. Corrosion on circuit board traces is more serious. If the traces (the copper pathways on the board) are corroded through, the board is damaged and may need replacement.
Fix the entry point. Drying the box does nothing if you don’t stop the water from coming back in. We seal the box, fix the conduit, add drip loops, and address whatever allowed the moisture in the first place.
Hermosa Beach gate systems need more frequent electrical maintenance than inland systems. Here’s what we recommend:
Fog in Hermosa is basically a salt water mist that settles on everything. If your control box or junction boxes have even small gaps, fog moisture gets in and creates a conductive film across terminals and board traces. The system shorts intermittently while the moisture is present and works fine once things dry out. The fix is sealing the entry points so the fog can’t get in.
Conformal coating (a clear protective spray applied to circuit boards) is used in marine electronics and does help. But it needs to be applied to a clean, dry board and it makes future board repair difficult because the coating has to be removed to solder anything. For most residential gate boards, proper housing sealing is a better approach than coating the board itself.
Salt accelerates corrosion dramatically. Normal oxidation of copper takes years in dry air. Salt air can corrode an exposed copper terminal in weeks. The salt acts as an electrolyte, creating a chemical cell that eats through metal. That’s why coastal gate systems need stainless steel hardware, sealed enclosures, and more frequent maintenance than inland systems.
One block from the beach in Hermosa means you’re getting direct marine air exposure. Stainless steel screws, hinges, and mounting hardware aren’t optional at that distance. Standard zinc-plated hardware will corrode within a year. Stainless costs more upfront but eliminates hardware replacement as a recurring expense.
