Same-day gate repair across LA. LiftMaster, All-O-Matic, DoorKing, FAAC, Viking, Maximum Controls.
A.J. is extremely knowledgeable and technically brilliant. He solved gate problems nobody else could.
We replace more fried gate control boards in Beverly Hills than almost anywhere else in LA. The pattern is always the same: a power flicker, a storm, or sometimes nothing obvious at all. The homeowner tries to open the gate, nothing happens, and they find the control board completely dark. No LEDs, no response, no sign of life.
Power surges are the number one killer of gate electronics. Not lightning strikes (though those happen too). The everyday surges that travel through LA’s aging power grid do the real damage. They’re invisible, they happen dozens of times a year, and a single bad one can fry a control board, transformer, and motor in the same instant. Beverly Hills estates with high-end gate systems are especially vulnerable because there’s more electronics to damage.
This page explains how surges destroy gate systems, what protection actually works, and why a small investment in surge protection prevents a massive repair bill. For complete gate repair in Beverly Hills, see our Beverly Hills gate repair page or our LA gate repair hub.

A surge is a spike of voltage that exceeds what your equipment is designed to handle. Your gate operator runs on 120V or 24V depending on the system. A surge can push hundreds or thousands of volts through those same wires for a fraction of a second. That’s enough to burn out circuit board components, melt solder joints, and destroy the sensitive microprocessors that control your gate.
Most people picture a lightning bolt hitting their gate post. That’s dramatic but rare. The real threat is indirect surges that travel through the power grid, ground wiring, and even phone lines from miles away. A transformer blows three blocks over, and the resulting spike travels through the neighborhood’s electrical system right into your gate control box. DWP grid switching, construction equipment on your street, even a car hitting a utility pole blocks away can send a surge your way.
Here’s what makes surge damage so expensive: it usually doesn’t stop at the control board. A strong surge travels through the board into the transformer and motor simultaneously. We open the control box expecting to replace one board and find the transformer is cooked and the motor windings are shorted. All three components, destroyed by a single event that lasted milliseconds. That turns a board replacement into a full system rebuild.
Open your gate’s control box and look at the circuit board. Surge damage shows up as darkened or blackened spots on the board, melted solder, bulging capacitors, or a faint burnt smell. Sometimes the damage is invisible to the naked eye because the microprocessor failed internally with no external sign. If the board is completely dark (no LEDs at all) and you’ve confirmed power is reaching the box, the board is almost certainly gone.
A surge protection device (SPD) sits between your power supply and your gate operator. When voltage spikes above the safe threshold, the SPD diverts the excess energy to ground before it reaches the control board. Think of it as a pressure relief valve for electricity. Normal voltage passes through untouched. Dangerous spikes get shunted away.
The SPD installs inside or adjacent to the gate operator’s control box, on the incoming power line. It takes about 15 minutes to add during a service visit. We also recommend a dedicated ground rod at the operator post. Proper grounding is the single most important factor in surge protection. Without a good ground path, the SPD has nowhere to send the excess energy.
An SPD won’t protect against a direct lightning strike on the gate post. Nothing realistically will. It also won’t fix existing surge damage or protect against problems that aren’t surge-related (like heat damage, insect infestation, or water intrusion). But for the everyday grid surges that kill the vast majority of gate boards in Beverly Hills, an SPD is the right protection.
While we’re talking about board failures, ants deserve a mention. Ant colonies inside gate control boxes cause more board failures than people realize. Ants are attracted to the warmth and the electromagnetic fields around circuit boards. They bridge connections between components, create short circuits, and fry the board from the inside. We’ve opened control boxes in Beverly Hills that were packed with ant colonies, the board completely shorted out. Keeping the control box sealed and applying ant deterrent around the base of the post prevents this.
A fried control board means your gate is stuck wherever it was when the surge hit. Open, closed, or halfway. No remote access, no keypad entry, nothing until the board is replaced. For Beverly Hills homes where the gate is the primary security barrier, that’s a serious vulnerability. Adding surge protection during your next service visit is the simplest way to prevent the most expensive repair we do.

Many policies do cover power surge damage to permanently installed equipment, which includes gate operators. You’ll need documentation of the surge event and the repair invoice. We provide detailed repair reports that include the diagnosis and evidence of surge damage. Check your specific policy and talk to your adjuster, because coverage varies.
We don’t recommend it. The SPD connects to your gate’s incoming power line and ground system. Incorrect installation can create a shock hazard or leave the SPD ineffective. It’s a quick add-on during any service visit, and we make sure the grounding is done right.
Absolutely. Most damaging surges have nothing to do with weather. Grid switching, utility work, construction equipment, even a blown transformer down the street can send a spike through your wiring. If the board shows burn marks or the failure was sudden (working fine one day, dead the next), a surge is the most likely cause.
SPDs degrade each time they absorb a surge. Most quality units have an indicator light that turns off when the device is spent. We check the SPD during every service visit and replace it if it’s been used up. In Beverly Hills, we typically see SPDs lasting 3 to 5 years before they need replacement, depending on how active the local grid is.
Technician Tip: Document Your Board Before It Dies
Take a photo of your gate control board’s wiring right now, while everything works. If the board ever needs replacement, having a photo of the original wiring saves time and prevents mis-wiring the new board. Board swaps are straightforward, but reconnecting wires to the wrong terminals is the number one callback after a board replacement. One clear photo prevents that entirely.
Protect your Beverly Hills gate from the next power surge.
