A.J. is extremely knowledgeable and technically brilliant. He solved gate problems nobody else could.
Three blocks from the ocean. That’s all it takes. The gate was installed five years ago with standard galvanized hardware, and now the hinges look like they’ve been sitting at the bottom of a tide pool. Rust is bleeding down the posts, the latch barely turns, and the bolts that hold the operator bracket are so corroded they’ll snap before they’ll unthread. This is Hermosa Beach gate ownership.
Salt air doesn’t care what brand your gate is or how much you paid for it. Microscopic salt particles land on every metal surface, attract moisture from the marine layer, and start an electrochemical reaction that eats steel from the inside out. What takes 15 years of weathering inland happens in 3 to 5 years on the Strand.
The Tech Guys Doors and Gates repairs salt-damaged gates across Hermosa Beach. We know which materials survive the coast and which ones don’t, and we replace corroded components with hardware that’s built for this environment.

Salt air corrosion goes deeper than surface rust. It’s a process called galvanic corrosion that accelerates whenever two different metals are in contact. The salt moisture creates an electrolyte between the metals, turning your gate hardware into a slow-motion battery that consumes itself.
A steel bolt threaded into an aluminum bracket corrodes at the junction point. A galvanized hinge pin inside a powder-coated steel barrel rusts where the coating is scratched. Stainless steel screws in a mild steel post create a reaction where the post corrodes faster around each screw hole. Every metal-to-metal connection on a coastal gate is a potential failure point.
The marine layer in Hermosa Beach makes it worse. That morning fog carries dissolved salt along with the moisture. It that settles on every surface and creeps into every crevice. Parts that look clean and dry by noon were soaking in saltwater all night.
Not all metals fail at the same rate on the coast. Here’s what we see in Hermosa Beach, ranked from worst to best.
Untreated mild steel is the fastest to corrode. If the paint or powder coat gets chipped, scratched, or wears through at a contact point, rust starts within weeks. Many budget gates use mild steel for the frame, hinges, and brackets. They look great for the first two years, then the rust bleeds through.
Hot-dip galvanized steel has a zinc coating that sacrifices itself to protect the steel underneath. It works well inland. On the coast, the zinc layer dissolves faster and the protection window shrinks from decades to 5 to 8 years. Once the zinc is gone, you have bare steel exposed to salt air.
Aluminum doesn’t rust in the traditional sense. It forms a thin oxide layer that actually protects the surface. But aluminum is vulnerable to pitting corrosion in salt environments, especially at fastener holes and contact points. Aluminum gates hold up better than steel, but the hardware connecting them (hinges, brackets, bolts) is usually a different metal, and that’s where galvanic corrosion hits.
Marine-grade 316 stainless steel is the standard for coastal hardware. The molybdenum content resists chloride attack, which is exactly what salt air delivers. It’s significantly more expensive than standard 304 stainless or galvanized, but on a Hermosa Beach gate, it’s the only hardware that holds up long-term without constant maintenance.
Not all corrosion is an emergency. Knowing the difference saves you money and helps you prioritize repairs.
Surface rust on a gate panel that hasn’t penetrated the metal thickness. The paint is bubbling, rust streaks are visible, but the steel underneath is still solid. You can press on it with your thumb and it doesn’t flex or crumble. Cosmetic corrosion needs cleaning, treatment, and repainting, but the gate is structurally sound.
When rust has eaten through the metal, you’ll see flaking, pitting, and thin spots. Press on a corroded area and it crumbles or flexes. Structural corrosion on a hinge mount, a post base, or a frame joint is a safety issue. The component needs replacement, not just cosmetic treatment. A corroded hinge pin that snaps releases a gate panel that weighs hundreds of pounds.
The tricky part: structural corrosion often hides under surface rust. A hinge barrel might look like it just needs cleaning, but inside, the pin has lost 40% of its diameter. We always disassemble suspect hardware to inspect the hidden surfaces. What looks cosmetic from the outside can be structural underneath.
Prevention doesn’t stop corrosion. Nothing does, this close to the ocean. But the right maintenance schedule slows it down enough that your gate lasts 15 to 20 years instead of 5 to 8.
Powder coating protects the surface, but it’s not impenetrable. Any scratch, chip, or worn spot exposes bare steel underneath. Salt air gets into that exposed spot and corrosion starts from within, spreading under the coating. Touch up chips immediately and inspect the coating annually for signs of bubbling, which means rust is forming underneath.
Try to move the hinge pin by hand. If it’s frozen in place and won’t rotate, the internal surfaces are corroded and the hinge needs replacement. If the pin still turns and the hinge feels solid, cleaning and lubricating will extend its life. We always pull the pin to inspect the bore when servicing coastal gate hinges.
Aluminum resists salt corrosion much better than steel, but it’s softer and more expensive. Aluminum gates work well for lighter swing gates. For heavy slide gates, steel frames are still the standard because the strength-to-weight ratio is better. The key with steel is proper coating and 316 stainless fasteners throughout.
Every 6 months minimum. If your gate is within 3 blocks of the ocean, every 4 months. The closer you are, the faster corrosion progresses. We offer maintenance plans for Hermosa Beach properties that include hardware inspection, lubrication, and fastener replacement on a scheduled basis.
