Brentwood driveways are lined with some of the nicest wooden gates in Los Angeles. Cedar, redwood, mahogany panels set into custom frames. They look incredible for the first few years. Then the LA rain cycle hits, the wood swells, the gate won’t latch, and the operator starts fighting a panel that’s twisted itself out of square.
We’ve serviced wooden driveway gates across Brentwood for years, and the pattern is always the same. The gate was built beautifully, sealed on the front, and left raw on the back. Moisture crept in through the unsealed side, the end grain soaked it up like a sponge, and the whole panel warped. If you’re dealing with a wooden gate that sticks after rain or sags on one side, you’re not alone. This is the most common issue we see on Brentwood’s tree-lined streets.
This page covers why wooden gates fail, what actually fixes them, and when it’s time to stop adjusting and start rebuilding. If you need broader gate repair help in Brentwood, check our complete Brentwood gate repair page or our LA gate repair hub.

Wood moves. That’s not a defect. It’s just what wood does. It absorbs moisture and expands. It dries out and contracts. The problem isn’t the movement itself. It’s uneven movement. When one side of the gate absorbs more water than the other, the panel twists.
Here’s what we see on almost every warped gate in Brentwood: the front face has a nice stain or sealant. The back? Raw wood. The edges and end grain? Never touched. End grain absorbs roughly 10 times more moisture than face grain. So when it rains, water wicks up through the bottom of the gate and saturates the unsealed surfaces while the sealed front stays dry. One side swells, the other doesn’t, and the gate twists like a propeller.
This is especially common on Brentwood’s older custom gates where the original builder focused on the street-facing appearance and skipped everything the homeowner couldn’t see.
Wooden gates that sit close to the ground or touch pavement at the bottom are rotting from the ground up. Moisture wicks upward through the end grain at the bottom rail. We’ve pulled gates in Brentwood where the bottom 4 inches were soft enough to push a screwdriver through, but the homeowner couldn’t see it because the rot was hidden behind the bottom rail.
If your gate drags on the ground or the bottom edge looks dark and soft, the wood is already compromised. No amount of sealant will fix active rot. That section needs to be cut out and replaced.
Across forums and in our own experience, wooden gates wider than 8 feet without a steel subframe are repeat service calls. The span is just too wide for wood alone to stay straight. The weight pulls the latch side down over time, the hinges stress, and the gate sags into a parallelogram shape. Every gate tech who works Brentwood knows this. A steel frame with wood infill panels is the long-term answer for wide driveway gates.
We adjust the gap between the gate and the post to allow about 1/8-inch clearance when the wood is swollen. That means the gap will be around 1/2-inch during dry months. You have to accept some seasonal variation with wood. There’s no setting that works perfectly year-round. We also install anti-sag cable kits: a turnbuckle and steel cable running diagonally from the bottom hinge corner to the top latch corner. This counteracts the twisting force and keeps the gate square.
When the gate is warped enough that the operator is fighting it on every cycle, the motor and gears are taking damage. We see stripped gears and burned-out motors on automated wooden gates that have been forcing through a warp for months. At this stage, we’ll straighten what we can with the anti-sag cable, adjust the operator force settings, and seal every surface of the gate: front, back, edges, and especially the end grain. Marine-grade spar urethane outperforms standard exterior stain by 3 to 5 times on moisture resistance.
The gate panel needs replacement. No adjustment or cable will pull several inches of warp back into square, and forcing it just damages everything around it. We’ll build a new panel on a steel subframe so the wood can swell and shrink without affecting how the gate operates. The wood becomes decorative. The steel does the structural work. It’s more upfront, but you stop calling us every rainy season.
A warped wooden gate doesn’t just look bad. It puts stress on every part of the system. Hinges bend. Posts shift. Operators overheat trying to push through resistance. Photo eyes go out of alignment because the gate panel has moved. What starts as a cosmetic issue turns into a full mechanical problem if you let it go.

Every 1 to 2 years with a quality exterior sealant. If you’re using marine-grade spar urethane, you can push closer to 2 years. Standard exterior stain needs annual touch-ups. The key is sealing ALL surfaces, not just the front. Flip the gate open and coat the back, the edges, and the end grain at the top and bottom.
Minor to moderate warps, yes. An anti-sag cable with a turnbuckle can pull a twisted gate back into square. We use this fix regularly on Brentwood gates with up to about an inch of warp. Beyond that, the wood fibers have permanently deformed and replacement is the honest answer.
If your gate is wider than 8 feet and you’re tired of seasonal adjustments, yes. We can retrofit a steel subframe behind the existing wood panels or build a new gate with steel structure and fresh wood infill. Either way, the steel holds the shape and the wood just needs to look good.
Swollen wood adds resistance. Your operator has a force limit, and when the gate gets harder to move, the operator thinks it hit an obstruction and reverses or shuts down. We can adjust the force setting, but that’s a band-aid. The real fix is addressing the wood swelling so the gate moves freely in all weather.
Technician Tip: The Quick Moisture Test
Splash some water on the back of your gate. If it soaks in and darkens the wood within 30 seconds, your sealant is gone or was never applied. If the water beads up and rolls off, you’re protected. Do this test once a year, and you’ll catch failing sealant before the next rainy season causes warping.
