Why Los Angeles Properties Choose UniFi Intercom Installation

No Monthly Fees

You own the hardware, the recording, and the software. Compare to Verkada or Ring at $200 to $1,800 per camera per year in subscription fees. UniFi runs on your own UniFi Console. One-time hardware cost, zero ongoing licenses.

One App for Everything

Intercom, gate, cameras, and Wi-Fi all in the same UniFi dashboard. Most competing systems need 3 or 4 different apps. Your property manager or facilities team manages one login, not five.

Apple and Google Wallet

Residents and staff tap their phone or Apple Watch to unlock. Add a new tenant, send them a Mobile Pass, they tap in the same day. No key fobs to lose, no codes to share.

AI Face Recognition

The G6 Entry and G6 Pro Entry include on-device face recognition. Recognize a resident before they even touch the reader. Guests get logged with a photo automatically.

Gate and Smart Lock Integration

We wire the UniFi Door Hub into LiftMaster, DoorKing, and Elite gate operators. We also tie in Schlage, Yale, and Kwikset smart locks. One intercom unlocks the pedestrian gate, the driveway gate, and the front door.

Local Recording, Private Data

Video from the intercom lives on your own UniFi Network Video Recorder, not in a vendor’s cloud. Good for privacy, better for HIPAA and compliance reviews, faster for playback.

UniFi Intercom Models We Install in Los Angeles (G3, G4, G5, G6)

Ubiquiti has shipped four generations of intercom and doorbell hardware. We service all of them, and we advise on which one fits your build. Older generations are still supported and still in the field across LA.

G3 UniFi Intercoms

The earliest UniFi intercom hardware. Still running in older installs around LA. We service, troubleshoot, and swap out G3 units for current hardware if the firmware or optics are showing their age. If you’ve got a G3 on site, we can usually keep it running or plan a clean migration to G5 or G6.

G4 UniFi Doorbell and Intercom

The second-generation lineup. G4 Doorbell and G4 Doorbell Pro are widely deployed across LA homes and small offices. 2-way audio, 5MP camera, mobile unlock. We install new G4 units for budget-conscious deployments, and we service existing G4 installs where upgrading to G6 isn’t worth it yet.

G5 UniFi Intercom and Doorbell

The workhorse generation. G5 Intercom, G5 Doorbell, and UVC-G5 variants are the most common UniFi intercoms we see in Los Angeles properties. 8MP main camera, PoE-powered, weatherproof. Good for multifamily, commercial lobbies, and residential gated entries. We install G5 hardware for properties that want solid video quality without jumping to the newest tier.

G6 Entry and G6 Pro Entry (Current 2025 Lineup)

G6 Entry pairs a 5MP main camera with an 8MP package camera, IP55 weatherproofing, Apple and Google Wallet NFC unlock, and on-device face recognition. G6 Pro Entry steps up to a 12MP AI sensor. These are what we recommend for new installs where you want every feature on the platform.

UniFi Door Hub for Access Control in Los Angeles

UniFi intercoms don’t work alone. They plug into a UniFi Door Hub, the small box that handles door control, credential validation, and the relay that actually unlocks the lock or gate operator. The Door Hub is what your facility manager or IT team works with day to day.

  • Single-door Door Hub for small installs: one entry, one intercom, one relay.
  • Two-door Door Hub for properties with both a pedestrian gate and a driveway gate on the same UniFi system.
  • Retrofit Door Hub for replacing a 1980s or 1990s intercom without ripping out the existing Wiegand wiring. Huge for older LA apartment buildings.

We mount the Door Hub in your IT closet or utility room, wire it into your existing door strike or gate relay, and commission it on your UniFi Console. Once it’s live, the intercom at the door is ready to go.

UniFi Intercom Viewer for Multi-Unit Buildings

The UniFi Intercom Viewer is a small PoE-powered touchscreen that mounts inside each unit. When a visitor rings the gate intercom, the viewer rings in the apartment, shows the live video, and lets the resident talk and unlock with one tap.

Residents who prefer their phone can skip the viewer entirely. The UniFi Identity app rings the same call on the phone. Most LA multifamily clients we work with install one viewer per unit anyway, because older residents and house guests find the in-wall screen easier than an app.

UniFi Intercom Installation by Property Type in LA

Single-Family Homes

Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Bel Air. G6 Entry at the front door, Intercom Viewer in the kitchen, tied to a LiftMaster driveway gate. Homeowners get visitor notifications on their phone. Housekeepers and contractors get time-limited Mobile Pass access.

Apartment Buildings

Santa Monica, Culver City, Brentwood. UA-Intercom at the main entry, Intercom Viewer in each unit, Retrofit Hub tying into existing wiring. Residents unlock from phone, Apple Watch, or the viewer. No more lost key fobs or broken telephone entry panels.

HOAs and Gated Properties

Marina del Rey, Pacific Palisades, Malibu. G5 Intercom at the pedestrian gate, paired with a LiftMaster or DoorKing gate operator. The HOA board gets a dashboard of visitor activity. Homeowners manage their own guest codes.

Commercial Lobbies

DTLA, Century City, Santa Monica creative offices. G6 Pro Entry at the suite door, tied to Envoy or an intercom panel at the lobby. Visitors check in with a Mobile Pass sent by email. Building management sees the full audit log.

Retail and Small Business

West Hollywood, Silver Lake, Echo Park. G6 Entry on the storefront back door, wired into an electric strike. Staff unlock with their phone. Delivery drivers get one-time PIN codes that expire at close.

Short-Term Rentals

Airbnb hosts in Venice Beach, Hermosa Beach, and the Palisades. G4 Doorbell at the front door, tied to a Schlage smart lock. Guests get a check-in code via email that auto-expires at check-out.

Apartment Intercom Retrofit to UniFi in Los Angeles

LA has thousands of apartment buildings still running Taktone, DoorKing, or early cellular intercom systems from the 1980s and 1990s. Residents hate them. Property managers hate them. The telephone lines they depend on are being phased out by Verizon and Spectrum.

The UniFi Retrofit Door Hub lets us drop in a modern UniFi intercom without pulling new wire through every unit. We reuse the existing Wiegand cable or the old analog handset pairs, connect the new hub in the basement, mount a G5 or G6 intercom at the entry, and install Intercom Viewers in each unit. Most 20-unit buildings complete in 3 to 5 days without displacing tenants.

This is the single most-requested UniFi install we do. If your building is on an old telephone entry system and you’ve been putting off replacing it, ask us for a retrofit walkthrough.

UniFi Intercom Integration with Gate Operators and Smart Locks

UniFi Door Hub drives standard relay outputs, so we can wire it into almost any gate operator or lock. Here’s what we tie UniFi to most often:

  • LiftMaster gate operators: LA500, LA400, CSL24UL, Elite Q222. Standard 2-wire relay input.
  • DoorKing gate operators: 9100, 9150, 9050. Same relay approach. We also tie DoorKing telephone entry to UniFi as a secondary entry point.
  • Elite gate operators: Q233, Q124. Dry contact from the Door Hub.
  • Electric strikes: HES 1006, Adams Rite 7400. Fail-secure installs for pedestrian doors.
  • Magnetic locks: 600 lb and 1,200 lb. For double doors and amenity rooms where code allows fail-safe.
  • Schlage, Yale, Kwikset smart locks: Z-Wave or Wi-Fi bridge. Tied to UniFi via Home Assistant or direct API where supported.
  • Electrified panic bars: Von Duprin 99 EL, Sargent 8800. For commercial back doors and stairwells.

UniFi Intercom Installation Process in Los Angeles

  1. Site walk. We visit the property, count doors, check the existing wiring and IT closet, and test the network. Usually takes an hour.
  2. System design. You get a proposal with the specific UniFi hardware, any supporting network gear (PoE switch, UniFi Console), lock and gate integration, and a clear timeline.
  3. Cable and rough-in. For new construction we pull CAT6 before drywall. For retrofit we reuse existing conduit or route around finishes. We confirm PoE budget before any install.
  4. Install and commissioning. Door Hub in the IT closet. Intercom at the entry. Intercom Viewer in each unit. We test every credential type against every door before we leave.
  5. Admin training. A 30-minute walkthrough of the UniFi dashboard for your property manager or facilities team. We cover adding tenants, issuing Mobile Pass, pulling the audit log, and the common day-to-day tasks.
  6. Ongoing service. We keep your site notes on file. Remote support for most issues. On-site within one business day across LA, OC, and San Diego.

UniFi Cabling and Network Requirements

UniFi intercoms run on PoE, which means power and data both come through one CAT5e or CAT6 cable from a UniFi PoE switch. A few things to know before the install:

  • CAT5e is the minimum, CAT6 is the standard, CAT6A only needed for runs over 100 meters.
  • PoE+ (802.3at) is required for G6 Entry and G6 Pro Entry. Standard PoE works for older generations. A G6 Entry pulls up to 12.95W with the heater and LED ring active.
  • UniFi Console is required: UDM-Pro, UDM-SE, Cloud Key Gen2 Plus, UNVR, or UDR. The intercom cannot run standalone.
  • VLAN segmentation is recommended to keep intercoms on their own network. We set this up during install.
  • Internet for Mobile Pass and remote unlock. The system keeps working locally if your internet goes down, but Mobile Pass credentials only update when the console has a connection.

If your property already runs UniFi network gear, the intercom layers on cleanly. If not, we include the supporting hardware in the proposal so you see the whole picture up front.

UniFi Intercom vs DoorBird vs 2N Comparison

These are the three IP intercoms we install most in LA. Here’s an honest take on when each one wins.

Feature UniFi DoorBird 2N
Monthly fees None None None
App ecosystem Unified UniFi app Dedicated DoorBird app My2N app + 3rd party
Smart home Home Assistant, limited Alexa/Google Full: Control4, Crestron, Loxone, HomeKit SIP, PBX, 3rd party
Network requirement Needs UniFi Console Works standalone Works standalone
Best fit Full-stack UniFi properties, retrofits Luxury residential, smart home Commercial multi-tenant, PBX integration

Short version: UniFi for properties that want one platform for everything. DoorBird for high-end residential that wants smart-home integration. 2N for commercial buildings with existing PBX or SIP systems.

UniFi Intercom Installation FAQ

Do I need a UniFi Door Hub for the intercom?

Yes. The intercom itself is a smart camera and reader. The Door Hub is what validates credentials and fires the relay to unlock the door or gate. Every UniFi intercom install includes at least one Door Hub.

Can UniFi replace my existing apartment intercom?

Yes, through the Retrofit Door Hub. We reuse the existing Wiegand or handset wiring, drop in a UniFi intercom at the entry, and install an Intercom Viewer in each unit. Most 20-unit retrofits complete in 3 to 5 days without tenant displacement.

Does UniFi intercom work with Apple Wallet or Google Wallet?

Yes, on G6 Entry and G6 Pro Entry. Residents and staff add a Mobile Pass to their wallet and tap their phone or Apple Watch to unlock. Older generations support NFC cards and mobile unlock through the UniFi Identity app.

Can the UniFi intercom call my phone if I don’t have an Intercom Viewer?

Yes. The UniFi Identity app rings on your phone when a visitor presses the intercom. You see live video, talk two-way, and unlock with one tap. Intercom Viewers are optional, not required. We recommend them for multifamily where some residents prefer a wall-mounted screen to an app.

Does UniFi work with my existing gate operator?

Almost always. The Door Hub drives a standard relay output, which plugs into LiftMaster, DoorKing, Elite, Viking, and any gate operator with a dry-contact input. If you have an unusual operator, we verify during the site walk.

Does UniFi Intercom require monthly fees?

No. UniFi is a one-time hardware cost. Video records to your own UniFi Console or UNVR. Mobile unlock, audit logs, and AI face recognition all run locally. The only recurring cost is Apple and Google Wallet Touch Pass, which is 10 free per year then around $5 per user per year.

What happens if my internet goes down?

The intercom keeps working locally. Residents can still unlock with their phone, Mobile Pass, or PIN. Incoming visitor calls still ring the Intercom Viewer. You lose remote unlock from outside the property until your connection returns.

Can I use older G3, G4, or G5 intercoms on a new UniFi Console?

Yes. Every UniFi generation runs on the same UniFi Access app. We can migrate an older G3 or G4 intercom into a new UDM-Pro or UNVR and keep the existing hardware in service. New installs start on G6, but we don’t push upgrades on properties where older generations are still working well.

Is UniFi the same as Ubiquiti?

UniFi is Ubiquiti’s product line. Ubiquiti is the company name. Most people use the two interchangeably when searching for intercoms and cameras. When you look for a “Ubiquiti intercom installer” or a “UniFi intercom installer” in LA, you’ll end up with the same product family: UniFi Access, UniFi Protect, and UniFi Identity.

Is UniFi intercom better than DoorBird for my home?

Depends. UniFi is better if you want one platform for intercom, gate, cameras, and network. DoorBird is better if you already have Control4, Crestron, Loxone, or HomeKit and want deep smart-home integration. We install both, and we’ll give you a straight answer after the site walk.
