License Plate Recognition Camera Installer Los Angeles
License plate recognition camera installer in LA. UniFi AI-LPR with no monthly fees, or Brivo and Eagle Eye Networks for enterprise.
AJ, Asher, and the team were great. I had a full service installation done a couple months ago, adding a state of the art AI security system that they recommended. Job was done professionally and promptly.
License plate recognition cameras are the single biggest upgrade we install in LA right now. Driveway gates open automatically when residents pull up. Visitor plates get logged with a timestamp and a snapshot. HOA boards see who entered the property and when. Commercial parking lots track vehicles in and out without a guard at the gate. We install LPR systems across Los Angeles for residential estates, gated communities, multifamily buildings, commercial offices, fleet yards, and parking garages.
We install two LPR systems. Ubiquiti UniFi AI-LPR is the no-monthly-fee option for residential and small commercial. Brivo paired with Eagle Eye Networks is the cloud enterprise stack for multi-site properties and HOAs that want a managed platform. Both integrate directly with your driveway gate operator. We design the system, pull cable, mount cameras at the right height and angle for plate capture, configure the AI, and tie everything into your gate.

Why Los Angeles Properties Need License Plate Recognition Now
LPR is the security layer LA property owners have been missing. Three reasons demand has gone vertical in the last 18 months:
- Driveway smash-and-grab is up. Estates in Bel Air, Beverly Hills, Hollywood Hills, and Encino are getting hit at the gate, not at the front door. LPR captures the plate before the vehicle reaches your house, alerts your phone in real time, and creates a record law enforcement can use.
- HOA boards want visitor logs. Communities in Calabasas, Hidden Hills, Marina del Rey, and Pacific Palisades are moving from paper sign-in sheets to automatic LPR logs. Every plate that crosses the gate gets recorded with a photo. Boards get weekly reports.
- Commercial parking and fleet operators need attribution. DTLA office buildings, dealerships, truck yards, and parking structures use LPR for tenant assignment, after-hours access, and fleet entry tracking. A single LPR camera replaces three guards and a clipboard.
The technology has also matured fast. Ubiquiti released the UVC-AI-LPR-B in 2024 with a 4K sensor, 3x optical zoom, and 90 km/h plate capture speed. Brivo and Eagle Eye Networks merged in December 2025 and now ship a unified cloud video and access platform with built-in LPR analytics. The two systems we install were not commercially viable five years ago. They are now.
The Two LPR Systems We Install in Los Angeles
We install one of two stacks depending on property type, budget, and management preference. Here is the short version:
UniFi AI-LPR (no monthly fee)
One-time hardware purchase. Camera, NVR, AI Key. You own the system, you own the recordings. Best for single-family estates, small HOAs, single-site commercial. Works with the gate operator you already have. Great for owners who do not want a recurring bill.
Best for: residential, single-site commercial, anyone allergic to subscriptions.
Brivo + Eagle Eye Networks (cloud enterprise)
Cloud-managed video and access on one platform. Per-camera monthly fee. Includes professional-grade LPR, multi-site federation, watchlist alerts, and full incident review tools. Best for properties with multiple gates, multi-tenant buildings, and HOAs that want a managed-service feel.
Best for: HOAs, multifamily, multi-site commercial, fleet yards.
We help you pick during the site walk. The two systems are not interchangeable. UniFi is the right answer most of the time for residential. Brivo and Eagle Eye is the right answer most of the time for commercial multi-site. We will not push you onto the wrong stack to hit a margin target.
UniFi AI-LPR: The No-Monthly-Fee Setup
Ubiquiti’s UniFi AI-LPR camera (model UVC-AI-LPR-B) is a 4K outdoor camera with a 3x optical zoom and a built-in AI processor. It captures plates at speeds up to 90 km/h, which covers any LA driveway, parking entrance, or service gate scenario. The camera mounts at 5 meters or below, angled less than 25 degrees from the lane of travel. It connects to a UniFi NVR with PoE+ over a single CAT6 cable.
What you get with the UniFi stack:
- One-time hardware cost. Camera, NVR, switch, AI Key. No subscription.
- Local recording. Video stays on your property. Compliant with strict privacy reviews.
- Allow-list, watch-list, block-list. Tag plates, get alerts, trigger gate open or block actions.
- Smart phone alerts. Push notifications for unknown plates, watch-list hits, and blocked plates.
- Full UniFi integration. Pairs with UniFi Access readers, UniFi intercoms, and UniFi Protect cameras on the same dashboard.
- Open API. Tie LPR events into Home Assistant, IFTTT, or any third-party automation.
This is what we install for most single-family residential estates and small commercial sites. The total install for a one-camera setup with NVR and basic AI runs $2,000 to $5,000 hardware plus install labor. There is no recurring cost after install.
Brivo and Eagle Eye Networks: The Enterprise Cloud Stack
For commercial buildings, multi-site operators, and HOAs that want a managed platform, we install Brivo Access paired with Eagle Eye Networks cloud video. The two companies merged in December 2025 and now ship a unified cloud platform with native LPR analytics. Access events, video clips, and plate captures live in one portal. Property managers see everything from a single login.
Why this is the right stack for commercial:
- Cloud-native, multi-site. One Brivo dashboard manages every property, every gate, every camera.
- Eagle Eye LPR analytics. Server-grade plate recognition, white-list and watch-list automation, geofenced alerts.
- Mobile credential + plate match. Drivers can use their phone OR their plate to unlock. The system records both.
- Integrated incident review. Click an access event, see the matching plate capture and surveillance clip in one workflow.
- SOC 2 and ISO 27001 compliant. Important for healthcare, financial, and government tenants.
- Per-camera monthly fee. Predictable operating expense. Includes hardware updates, cloud storage, and professional support.
Property managers and HOA boards prefer this stack because it removes the burden of running their own NVR. Eagle Eye stores 30 days of footage in the cloud by default, with longer retention available. Brivo handles the access control side. We install both pieces and configure the LPR integration during commissioning.
LPR Plus Driveway Gate Auto-Open: How the Integration Works
This is where we separate from every other LA installer. We are a gate company first. We have wired LPR cameras into LiftMaster, DoorKing, Elite, FAAC, Viking, and All-O-Matic gate operators across hundreds of LA properties. The integration is not theoretical. We do it every week.
Here is how the auto-open flow works:
- A vehicle approaches the driveway gate.
- The LPR camera reads the plate at 5 to 15 meters from the gate.
- The system checks the plate against your allow-list (residents, regular guests, contractors).
- If the plate is approved, the camera triggers a relay output that closes a dry-contact circuit.
- The relay wire feeds into the gate operator’s “open” input.
- The gate opens. The driver does not touch a remote, a keypad, or a phone.
- Every event gets logged: plate number, timestamp, snapshot, who got in, what time.
If the plate is unknown, the gate stays closed and the camera sends you an alert with the plate and snapshot. You can approve from your phone in two taps. If the plate is on a block-list, the gate stays closed and you get an immediate alert.
Most LA driveways need a single LPR camera mounted on the gate column or the wall behind. For longer driveways or split entry-exit gates, we install one camera per direction. For estates with multiple entry points, we install one camera per gate and federate the allow-list across all of them.
Allow-List, Watch-List, and Block-List Workflows
The real power of LPR is not the camera. It is the workflow you build on top of plate captures. Three lists do most of the work:
- Allow-list. Resident plates, regular contractors (housekeepers, gardeners, pool service), trusted delivery drivers. Auto-opens the gate. Logs the event but does not alert.
- Watch-list. Plates flagged for review (potential troublemakers, recently terminated employees, questionable contractors). Gate stays closed. You get an alert with the plate and snapshot.
- Block-list. Plates explicitly banned. Gate stays closed. Immediate alert. Optional siren or strobe activation if integrated.
HOA boards typically manage these lists themselves once we hand off the system. We provide a 30-minute training on adding plates, removing plates, exporting visitor logs, and reviewing recent events. Most boards add 1 to 5 new plates per week and review the visitor log monthly.

Camera Placement and Engineering for LA Conditions
Plate capture is mostly an optics and lighting problem, not a software problem. We engineer every install to handle LA-specific conditions:
- Mounting height. 4 to 5 meters is the sweet spot. Lower than 3 meters and you lose plate-pixel resolution. Higher than 6 meters and the angle gets too steep to read plates.
- Angle of view. Less than 25 degrees off the direction of vehicle travel. Steeper angles distort the plate too much for reliable reading.
- Plate pixel target. 150 to 200 pixels wide on the plate. We size the camera lens and zoom to hit this number at the typical capture distance.
- Sun glare. Coastal driveways in Malibu and Pacific Palisades get harsh western sun in the late afternoon. We mount the camera on the side that catches less glare or add a polarizing filter.
- Palm and tree shadow. Common in Beverly Hills and Brentwood. We trim the field of view or mount higher to clear the shadow line.
- Night and IR illumination. Built into both UniFi and Eagle Eye cameras. We tune the IR cutoff distance to match the plate position.
- Power. PoE+ over CAT6 from the IT closet. We pull a dedicated run for LPR cameras.
If your driveway has unusual geometry (a hard 90-degree turn, a steep grade, a narrow entry), we will tell you during the site walk if LPR is going to work or if you need a different layout. Honest assessment up front beats a refund three months in.
What We Have Learned From Real-World UniFi AI-LPR Deployments
The UniFi AI-LPR camera (model UVC-AI-LPR-B) shipped in late 2024. Owners and integrators on the Ubiquiti community have been candid about what works and what does not. We have folded their findings into our install playbook:
- Night reading is genuinely fixed. The previous UniFi AI Pro could see a car at night but never read a plate. The AI-LPR ships with an LPR-tuned IR filter that reflects cleanly off retroreflective plates. One community reviewer summed it up: “The AI Pro never detected a single plate at night despite detecting motion, cars, and people. The AI-LPR is a game changer.”
- Distance and angle matter more at night than during the day. Infrared does not bounce well off plates that are far away or tilted. Real-world tests at 9 to 15 feet from the road found that wider angles or longer distances missed plates after sunset, even when daytime captures were perfect.
- The OCR is good, not perfect. Ubiquiti’s character recognition occasionally misreads a letter (an O for a zero, a B for an 8). The plate still gets captured and logged. We configure the allowlist matcher to fuzzy-compare so a one-character miss still triggers gate open for known residents.
- Speed ceiling: 56 mph. Ubiquiti rates the camera for plate capture up to 56 mph (about 90 km/h). Most LA driveways are well under that. Commercial parking entries with a barrier arm are usually under 10 mph. The camera has plenty of headroom for our market.
- IR reach: 15 meters (50 feet). Past that range, plates start to wash out at night. We position cameras inside that range or add a second camera at long entries.
- Mount close, mount low, keep the angle tight. Ubiquiti’s official recommendation is 5 m maximum mounting height with horizontal and vertical angles under 25 degrees. For slow or stopped traffic at gate barriers, up to 15 m and 30 degrees is workable. We engineer to the stricter end so the camera performs in every condition.
The takeaway: this is the first Ubiquiti camera that handles plate recognition at night, and the install geometry decides whether it earns that promise or wastes it. We have wired enough of these now to know where to put them.
What LPR Camera Installation Costs in Los Angeles
Most LA installers refuse to give cost ranges. We will. Here is what real LPR installs cost in our market:
- Single residential driveway, UniFi stack: $2,000 to $5,000. One camera, NVR, install labor, gate operator integration. No monthly fee.
- Two-camera residential (entry plus exit) UniFi: $3,500 to $7,500. Doubles the camera count, same NVR.
- Small HOA, two gates, Brivo plus Eagle Eye: $5,000 to $9,000 install. $50 to $100 per camera per month cloud subscription.
- Mid-size HOA or multifamily, four to six cameras, Brivo plus Eagle Eye: $9,000 to $15,000 install. $200 to $500 per month cloud.
- Commercial parking lot, eight to twelve cameras, full Brivo plus Eagle Eye: $15,000 to $40,000 install. $400 to $1,200 per month cloud.
What drives cost up: long cable runs, structured cabling, conduit through hardscape, multi-gate federation, after-hours install for commercial sites, network upgrades. What drives cost down: existing UniFi network, existing Brivo deployment, simple driveway geometry, single gate.
We send a line-item proposal after the site walk. No surprises, no upsells.
UniFi vs Brivo+Eagle Eye vs Verkada vs Avigilon vs Flock vs Hikvision
Six platforms compete for LPR installs. Here is the honest comparison.
| Platform | Subscription | Best For | Gate Integration |
|---|---|---|---|
| UniFi AI-LPR | None | Residential, single-site SMB | Native via UniFi Access |
| Brivo + Eagle Eye | Per camera per month | Multi-site commercial, HOAs | Native via Brivo Access |
| Verkada | Per camera per year | Single-vendor cloud-first deployments | Verkada Access only |
| Avigilon Alta | Per camera per year | Larger commercial, gov | Avigilon Alta only |
| Flock Safety | $2,500 per camera per year | Police, HOAs willing to pay | Limited third-party |
| Hikvision DeepinView | None (on-prem NVR) | Industrial, low-light | Limited, third-party |
Short take: UniFi wins on cost of ownership for residential and small commercial. Brivo plus Eagle Eye wins on multi-site management for HOAs and commercial. Flock is the most expensive option by a wide margin and only makes sense if you are mandated to share data with police. Verkada and Avigilon are good platforms but lock you to their hardware.
California Privacy and LPR on Private Property
California treats LPR data as personal information under the CCPA. If you are running LPR on private property in LA, three things to know:
- Post a notice at the gate. A small sign noting that LPR cameras are in use is best practice. We provide a template during install.
- Set retention defaults. 30 to 90 days for most residential and HOA use cases. Eagle Eye and UniFi let you configure this in the dashboard. Longer retention means more privacy exposure if you get a subpoena.
- HOA boards should review their policy. The board decides who has access to plate logs, what retention period applies, and how requests for data are handled. We recommend running the policy past the HOA’s attorney before going live.
This is not legal advice. We help with the technical setup. For the legal side, your attorney is the right call. CCPA compliance for private property LPR is well-trodden ground; most HOA attorneys can handle it in 1 to 2 hours of work.
Our Five-Step LA LPR Install Process
- Site walk and survey. We visit, measure the driveway or parking entrance, check the existing gate operator and network, identify mounting locations and cable run paths. Free, usually takes an hour.
- System design. You get a property map, hardware list, network plan, AI configuration, and gate integration wiring diagram. We pick UniFi vs Brivo+Eagle Eye and tell you why.
- Cable pull and rough-in. CAT6 from the IT closet to each LPR camera. Conduit for exterior runs. Pull cords for future expansion.
- Mount, wire, configure. Camera at the right height and angle. Connection to NVR or cloud. AI training for plate capture in your specific lighting. Allow-list seeded with your initial plates.
- Test, train, hand off. Drive every approved car through the gate to confirm auto-open. Train you or the property manager on adding plates, reviewing logs, and exporting incidents. We are on call for the first 30 days.
Typical timeline: 1 to 2 days for a single-camera residential install. 1 to 3 weeks for multi-camera commercial or HOA installs depending on cable runs.

License Plate Recognition Camera FAQ
How accurate are LPR cameras at night?
UniFi AI-LPR and Eagle Eye Networks both ship with built-in IR illumination and color-night modes. Reliable plate read accuracy at night is 95%+ on properly mounted cameras within 12 to 15 meters. Heavy rain or fog drops accuracy to 80 to 90%. We can add a dedicated IR illuminator for problem locations.
Will my driveway gate open automatically when my plate is recognized?
Yes. We wire a relay output from the LPR camera or NVR into the gate operator’s open input. Approved plates trigger the gate. Unknown plates do not. The integration works with LiftMaster, DoorKing, Elite, FAAC, Viking, and All-O-Matic. We have done this hundreds of times in LA.
Does UniFi LPR really have no monthly fee?
Yes. UniFi is a one-time hardware purchase. The AI Key, the camera, the NVR, the switch. You buy them once. The UniFi Network and Protect software is free. There is no per-camera fee, no cloud storage fee, no AI fee. You own everything.
What is the difference between UniFi LPR and Brivo + Eagle Eye?
UniFi is on-premise hardware with no monthly fee. Best for residential and single-site commercial. Brivo + Eagle Eye is cloud-managed with a monthly per-camera fee. Best for multi-site, HOAs, multifamily, and commercial properties that want a managed-service feel. Both have native gate integration. Both have professional LPR. The choice is about ownership preference and management model.
How fast can the camera read a plate?
UniFi AI-LPR captures plates at speeds up to 90 km/h, which covers any driveway or parking entry scenario. Eagle Eye Networks LPR is rated similarly for vehicles approaching at access-control speeds. For high-speed roadway capture (highway monitoring), you would need a dedicated industrial LPR camera. We do not install those.
Can the system alert me if a flagged plate enters?
Yes. Watch-list and block-list plates trigger immediate phone notifications with the plate number and a snapshot of the vehicle. UniFi sends through the UniFi mobile app. Eagle Eye sends through email and SMS. Both support multiple recipients (resident, property manager, HOA board, security firm).
Can our HOA board manage allow and block lists themselves?
Yes. Both UniFi and Brivo+Eagle Eye have web dashboards designed for non-technical board members. Adding a plate is three clicks. Removing a plate is two clicks. We provide a 30-minute training during handoff and stay on call for the first 30 days.
Do we need a permit to install LPR on private property in LA?
Permitting depends on the city, the property, and whether construction work is involved. LA proper does not typically require a permit for low-voltage camera installs on existing structures, but mounting on new poles or running new conduit can trigger one. We check during the site walk. If a permit is needed, we will tell you and recommend a path forward.
Is LPR legal in California on private property?
Yes, with caveats. Private property owners can install LPR on their own property. CCPA classifies plate captures as personal information, so you should post notice at the gate, set a reasonable retention period, and document your data handling policy. We recommend HOA boards run the policy past their attorney. This is not legal advice.
How much does a four-camera LPR install cost?
UniFi: $5,000 to $9,000 hardware and labor, no monthly fee. Brivo + Eagle Eye: $9,000 to $15,000 install plus $200 to $500 per month cloud subscription. Both include cabling, gate integration, AI training, and 30 days of post-install support. We send a line-item proposal after the site walk.
